We wanted to help tell the stories of unique independent businesses in the Midlands, in the way that’s closest to our hearts: through video. So we started our Local Business Spotlight, sharing short films we create for independent businesses to use on social media.
What better way to start than with chocolate?
Our first film features Choc’n’roll, an artisan chocolate studio in Coventry founded by Tony Davies. His chocolate creations are individually designed and expertly crafted. They look and taste amazing.
How we filmed it
Before filming, we spoke with Tony to plan our approach and make sure we captured the intricate craft of chocolate making.
The studio is a small space, so we shot on a Sony A7S II to capture the chocolatier’s movement while keeping far enough away not to disturb the process.
We lit the room with several lights and softened them with modifiers to lift the space, bring out the colour and give the whole film a warm feel. As we were filming live during the chocolate-making process, the setup had to be quick to move.
We were going for a magical, Willy Wonka feel. To get it, we filmed at different frame rates and added spot sound effects. A rich brown palette in the grade kept the chocolatey theme throughout.
